Banks returns to Diageo for update
14 December 2009 Following his meeting in July with Diageo management, Gordon Banks MP for Ochil and South Perthshire again met with the company last week to be updated on the company’s future plans. During the meeting Mr. Banks was able to discuss the planned new investment for a new Cooperage at Blackgrange as well as raise issues such as brand protection of Scotch Whisky, the current economic climate and the potential impact that minimum pricing could have on the business. After the meeting Gordon Banks said; “I have been a regular visitor to Diageo over the years and felt that this was the correct time to be updated on the current position of the company’s plans in Clackmannanshire.” “With the planning application lodged with Clackmannanshire Council it is very good news that the new Cooperage is a clear objective of the company.” “This will not only secure jobs in Clackmannanshire but will increase the numbers of Coopers working in the county as consolidation from Port Dundas takes place.” “The company has a strong presence in Clackmannanshire and this investment reinforces that presence and provides a strong footing for Diageo and Clackmannanshire to grow together in the future.” “Current economic conditions affect the whisky industry as any other sector but it is to be hoped that the company’s restructuring plans will ensure that it remains the market leader and in turn a significant employer in Clackmannanshire.” “Recent regulations to protect the Scotch Whisky brand will I also believe be helpful and contribute somewhat to strengthening the economic position world wide.” “It was also useful to speak to the company about the potential impact of recent proposals for minimum pricing per unit of alcohol and whilst these plans appear doomed to failure it was important to have a frank discussion on the potential impact such plans could have upon the drinks production sector.” “I will continue to have a clear and open dialogue with Diageo and was delighted to hear of recent successful developments in the Cooperage apprenticeship programme.”
